This post is a continuation of the previous post where we are looking at how the Hebrew numbers/letters reveal deeper meaning in the scripture.
John 4
Line 1: “Give me a drink, ” Jesus said to her.
The number one in Hebrew means Oneness, Unity, Primary, First, Beginning, One God. The Pictograph means strength, ox, chief, prince, leader. The first day (day one) was the first mentioning of the Holy Spirit hovering over the face of the waters. My favorite meaning for the number one means strong lead.
I have my own interpretation of these numbered lines in this passage and how they correlate to the Hebrew meanings, however, right now, I pray: Dear Heavenly Father, please reveal to our readers anything significant that You want them to know as they read through this passage with the Hebrew numbers in mind. Please let them and all of us see deeper into the scriptures, anoint our eyes and minds to see what You would have us see. In Jesus Name.
Jesus has a “strong lead” by opening the conversation to a Samaritan woman, that alone is a strong lead, but what He says is a directive, not a request, which also shows strength and confidence. First fruits come to my mind for some reason, I will need to dive deeper to see the relationship to that image. There is more here to see, please share with me if the Lord reveals to you anything more.
The second line is:
“How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” she asked him. For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.
The number 2 means House/Tent/Family. Two also means a divide, conflict, difference, to oppose, judge, discern, witness. It also means to bring a blessing. With the number 2, multiplication is possible. It is also interesting to note that on the second day, He divides the upper and lower waters. Two of anything is a pair. It is interesting that here at the well, it is only Jesus and the woman.
My interpretation: Like on the second day of creation, there is a divide right away, after God’s opening line, the waters are divided. The woman at the well immediately attempts to place a divide between herself and Jesus. Like the waters on the first day, she represents the lower water and Jesus represents the upper. Could the division also represent our own body versus our spirit… our flesh and carnal desires versus our spiritual life with Jesus? I also like that multiplication is possible with 2 and with her engaging in conversation with Jesus, she, ultimately, made it possible for others to hear about him, multiplying his message of salvation.
The third line:
Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God, and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would ask him, and he would give you living water,”
My interpretation: When I think of the number 3 and God, I think of the Trinity. Here, Jesus is speaking, He mentions God, and the living water is the Holy Spirit. This line has a lot more meaning. I am still meditating on this line to dive into it deeper. Perhaps the Lord will shed more light on this for you. Update: I recently learned from a source called Hebrew4christians.com that 3 also means to deal out, to give. So it is interesting that Jesus is talking about “giving” her living water. I knew there was more to this one!
The 4th and final line for today:
“Sir,” said the woman, “you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do you get this “living water’? You aren’t greater than our father Jacob, are you? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and livestock.”
The number four means time and authority. It declares God’s government of the universe. Holy places are in both space and time. The pictograph is door which means to move, to enter, (a pathway).
My interpretation: I find it interesting that she is speaking of the past regarding their great patriarch, Jacob. His position in their history represents time and authority to me. It was from Jacob that the 12 tribes began. Jacob’s well, to which she is referring is certainly considered a holy place for the Samaritans and the Jews. The history that she is mentioning is a pathway and a door to Jesus and the plan that God made for the whole world.
I know there is deeper meaning than what I have discussed here. My hope is that you will be led by the Spirit to find even more. I pray that my notes are merely a starting place for you to begin your exploration.
Next time, we will look at a few more lines and their meanings. This study was one of the most fascinating studies, He has given me. I hope you share my enthusiasm!
God Bless you today! In Jesus Name.
